Don't use toy boxes if you can avoid it - they are black holes for junk. Bookcases with plastic tubs or baskets are much easier for kids to keep tidy.
Get rid of stray pieces of paper by using a notebook to take all your notes down. Date the pages so you can find what you're looking for later.
Avoid using boxes with lids for frequent-use items, especially if you stack them. If you're in a rush, you'll avoid putting things away in them (and leave them on the closest available horizontal space to breed!).
